Sam Kerr scores brilliant double to win Chelsea the Women’s FA Cup

by News Desk

Sam Kerr has once again proven herself as one of the best footballers in the world, scoring two goals to help Chelsea to victory in the Women’s FA Cup final over Manchester City.

Kerr replicated her success in the 2021 Women’s FA Cup final, when she also scored twice.

Chelsea won the game 3-2, with Kerr scoring the team’s opening goal after 33 minutes, as well as the third, match-winning goal in extra time. She capitalised on a mistake of her Australian teammate and Manchester City player Alana Kennedy to score the final goal of the match.

“The double,” Kerr said after the match.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be part of this club. It’s the best club in the world and I’m just so proud.”

The final was held at Wembley in front of a crowd of 49, 094, which was a new record for a Women’s FA Cup final.

Emma Hayes, Chelsea’s manager, said she thought Manchester City underestimated Chelsea in the final.

“We had a point to prove and I thought we did really well with that,” Hayes said.

“This team will go down in history. It’s the best team I’ve coached. We always want to talk about perfection in football but having been on the winning side more often than not, it’s about human endeavour. We have a group of people that don’t want to be on the losing team. They find a way.”

The previous weekend Chelsea had won its third Women’s Super League title, where Kerr also scored a double. Kerr has now scored a total of eight goals across four English club finals.

Fellow Australian Hayley Raso also managed to score a goal for Manchester United after coming off the bench, equalising the match and forcing extra time. It wasn’t enough to stop Kerr, who brought it home for Chelsea in the way she so often does.
